The Composer

Michael Lampard is a composer, singer and conductor who was born in Hobart in 1986 and began studying composition in 2004 first with Douglas Knehans, then under the guidance of Constantine Koukias.

His compositions include two stage works: two chamber operas ‘Succubus’ which was premiered at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music in 2004, and 'Not Now Darling' as well as a children’s opera ‘Magic Mountain’ with libretto by Suzanne Ortuso. He has also composed concert works including two mass settings, a magnificat, a Stabat Mater, several song cycles, choral works and chamber works for piano and small ensembles. His pieces have been performed both in concert and in competitions in Australia, and his international credits include: the premiere of his brass quintet by members of the Rome Opera Festival Orchestra (Rome, 2005), and the premiere of his song ‘Shall I Compare Thee’ by Teresa Dody, head of vocal studies at the Nebraska University (Nebraska, 2007). His 'Ave Verum Corpus' for choir and organ was premiered by the Hobart Orpheus Choir to help celebrate their 130th Anniversary.

He is currently working on an opera ‘Like A Lamb – A Story of Joseph Smith’ with libretto by Nicholas King; and two chamber operas ‘Not Now Darling!’ with a libretto by the composer, and 'The 39th' with libretto by Suzanne Ortuso. Other projects include a newly commissioned song cycle, and a set of Puccini piano transcriptions.
